Having damaged, brittle or discoloured toenails is a very real problem for many of our patients. It forces them to hide their toenails
beneath closed-in shoes or socks, shy away from wearing their favourite sandals through our hot summer, or keep their nails painted to try
to hide their appearance - even though the polish may just be causing further damage. For some, the effects are more than aesthetic, with
crumbling nails painfully catching on the threads of socks and hosiery, and thickened nails creating pain in a shoe with a narrow toe box.
While we can’t always control what happens to our toenails, like if we drop something on them, pick up a fungal nail infection, or have nail psoriasis, we’re very thankful to be able to do something about the appearance of your toenails and give you an immediate improvement in your nail appearance in just 30 minutes.
Across our Brisbane and Newmarket clinics, we’re proud to offer a nail-transforming service called Keryflex. Our podiatrists first take the time and care to ‘prepare’ your nails, where we smooth their appearance, reduce thickness, and create a good base to use Keryflex on. Next, we use Keryflex to create an artificial nail over the existing nail that acts and feels like a real nail. Unlike nail salons, nails created with Keryflex don’t cause any damage to your nail beneath, instead letting it grow out while your nails are left looking great.
There are many reasons why Keryflex gets our podiatric tick of approval, and it’s all about doing good for your nail and foot health, instead of doing harm. Keryflex doesn’t allow any moisture to collect between the Keryflex nail and your natural nail, so it won’t cause any irritation, further damage, and won’t promote conditions like fungal nail infections. In fact, Keryflex contains an antifungal (Piroctone Olamine) to help retard the growth of existing fungal infections.
Keryflex nails are also flexible, light and move naturally with your toes - a very different experience than those rigid nails that you can feel tugging against your natural nail in some situations. For those that enjoy having painted nails, you are also welcome to keep your Keryflex nails painted and use acetone nail polish remover as you please.
A big benefit of Keryflex is that it’s able to be used immediately after your treatment with our PACT antifungal laser. This is an innovative treatment that utilises the interaction of light with photosensitive agents to produce an energy transfer and local chemical effect on the nail fungus. This is proven to destroy fungal infections without causing harm to the healthy nail tissues. Once the PACT treatment is complete, many patients choose to have Keryflex so they can maintain a healthy and natural nail appearance while their fungus-free toenails grow out.
Another large benefit of Keryflex is the conditions under which this service is performed. As medical practitioners, we undergo very strict processes around sterilisation, hygiene and safety. Just one example is washing and steam sterilising every individually packaged set of instruments to over 200 degrees Celsius for a considerable time. This is very different to most nail salons that go unregulated, and do not have to sterilise the tools they use.
Our team knows the impact your nails can have on your confidence and well-being, and take every measure to put your foot health first. This peace of mind is also why our Keryflex treatment has become a very popular gift for Mother’s Day, Christmas, birthdays and special occasions.
Men often have just as much discontentment with the appearance of their toenails as women do, especially during the summer and beach season. This is why many men also choose to have Keryflex nail restoration, to ‘invisibly’ improve the appearance of their nails and keep them feeling confident on their feet.
There are very few instances where Keryflex may be unsuitable for a person, such as if they have peripheral vascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, ingrown toenails, conditions that affect their ability to feel their feet, pregnancy or allergies to any of the products in Keryflex. We always check your suitability for Keryflex first, and all the circumstances above should be discussed with your podiatrist.
